Creating a Turquoise and Grey Nursery
Nearly twelve months after starting the process, we are now finished on our baby boy’s turquoise and grey nursery.
It’s been a long journey as I’ve been on maternity leave, so have just been buying bits as and when I could, but we are now finally finished and ready to show it off to the world.
Before we began work on the room, it had one purple and three grey walls, a threadbare blue carpet and it looked like it needed a good make over.
I love this room (which before the extension was the second bedroom, but is now the third biggest) because the light in the mornings creates such a beautiful glow in the room, and the views across the canal and towards the village and simply stunning. We also have a great view of some large trees where we see a huge variety of birds nesting – wood pigeons, crows, sparrows and robins and it’s nice just to sit and the window and take it all in.
We began the process of creating this room by painting the walls a uniform grey (Summer Grey by Valspar) and then creating a crisp look with bright white on the windowsill, skirtings and coving. Next, using the other greys in this particular Valspar collection (Warm Shale, Elephant in the Room and Empirical Grey) and a turquoise we created ourselves, I designed mountains on the main wall using masking tape. The feature wall only took half a day or so to complete and really brings this room to life.
Furniture
Taking centre stage in the room is it course the for, which we bought four years ago for Dexter and has lasted the test of time. I love it’s sleigh design and once Felix is old enough, it can be transformed into a cotbed which means it’s really been worth every single penny.
We invested in a set of HEMNES drawers from IKEA and alongside these we got the toddler sized STUVA wardrobe, giving us plenty of space for Felix’s ever expanding collection of clothes.
Finally, we have a teepee shaped shelving unit which we purchased from Homebase to store his toys and teddies.
Finishing touches to our turquoise and grey nursery
For the wardrobe and drawers, we purchased some cloud shaped handles which we painted with the same turquoise of the wall mountain which are not only easier for little hands to grab and open, but look stunning too.
The curtains were purchased from Curtains2Go and were the exact colour match for the turquoise we created ourselves and look stunning tucked away behind the curtain hang backs which came from Dunelm.
On the walls, I purchased two teepee shelves from Amazon which I painted white and turquoise. They hang nearby five framed grey prints from MyDawsy which are hung with white IKEA FISKBO frames.
The cloud lampshade came from Iconic Lights and is definitely Felix’s favourite feature in the room. Everyday, when I lift him out if his cot, he reaches up to the crystal rain drops to see how they feel between his fingers.
Finally, we recarpeted the room with a thick grey carpet which brings so much warmth and comfort to this grey and turquoise nursery. We got it from a local supplier who also fitted it for us.
I am so glad we have now finally finished our boys’ bedrooms – this grey and turquoise nursery and Dexter’s nautical themed toddler bedroom. We are now left with the master bedroom and the guest bedroom to complete upstairs, whilst we have the lounge and dining room to do downstairs. I am hoping now that I am back in work and have more money, progress will move a bit quicker in 2020, and as always, I’ll keep you updated with our ongoing plans.
