Making Our House a Home: Master Bedroom Update

October 28, 2020

It’s been over seven months since I last updated the blog on what we are doing home wise. Back in March I wrote a post all about the changes we had made to the lounge and the touches we had started with on the master bedroom. Then the pandemic hit.

Since then, it’s been a long and slow process, but we are getting there. Our bedroom is so close to completion. We’ve braved IKEA and got all the furniture, we’ve splashed out on all the light fittings and we finally were brave enough to purchase the most expensive piece of furniture we have ever spent money on – our emperor bed!

The master bedroom’s colour scheme

Back in March, literally days before the pandemic took ahold of the UK, our decorator came and painted the walls and glossed the skirtings. We chose modern grey for the wall colour which is a beautiful light shade of grey by Valspar paint.

At first, I was a bit unsure of the colour and was worried it was too blue, but as the months have rolled on, I have fallen in love with it. Our bedroom is so much lighter than it was before and suddenly such a breezy and lovely place to relax.

The white glossed doors and skirtings make the modern grey colour look superb and now we have a room filled with light.

The furniture

With us deciding on an emperor sized bed, there isn’t an awful lots of room left for furniture, but also it’s not really required as we have our walk-in wardrobe.

The shopping list for our bedroom included:

  • Bedside tables
  • Dressing table

Sounds simple right? And yes, it was!

We chose really thin bedside tables from IKEA (I have scanned the website and it seems they no longer sell them!) and a tiny BRUSALI desk for the little alcove area which I am using as a dressing table / office desk whilst I am working from home.

The Emperor

Our bed came from the English Bed Company which is located in Lancashire and was the biggest splurge we made for the room. Our emperor is 215×215 and could fit three adults comfortably. It is honestly the best investment we have ever made in terms of comfort and getting a good night’s sleep.

I can confirm, from a co-sleeping point of view, it wouldn’t matter if we had bought a Caeser, there still would not be enough space to sleep. Whenever Felix and Dexter join us (which thankfully is rare these days), I still only have a couple of inches of space to sleep with!

Lighting

We chose two bedside lights from Iconic Lights – the Ezrah Chrome Wall Lights and two ceiling lights, also from Iconic Lights – Hesketh Small Square and Nakita Droplet Flush.

Iconic Lights have sorted out all the lighting in our home, and honestly – I’d never choose anyone else. The products are always of exceptional quality and delivery is super quick too.

Flooring

As much as I love solid wood flooring, we decided on a carpet for this room, fitted by Hylton’s, who have fitted all our carpets. We chose the exact same carpet we have in our lounge – just because we love it so much!

It’s incredible getting out of our emperor bed each day and walking on soft, warm carpet!

What’s next?

The master bedroom is pretty much complete. We need a couple of plants, a shelf above the bed with some prints and a curtain for one of the windows, but we are done.

I have already moved onto the spare room which used to be Neil’s bike room, then became my office and will now be a proper spare bedroom with a bed for guests to stay.

I am currently painting the wall and buying all the furniture required from – you guessed it – IKEA!

I will share the progress really soon!
